I must travel to Malaysia in this period so not so easy to do. If I arrive in Shanghai with my Australian passport and a letter from Huawei with contacts and phone numbers will I be be given a visa - probably three days.

You can't get a VOA without a pre-approval letter issued by the government. However you can use free transit if you hold an eligible ticket.
