About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am an american in Beijing. I have a 60 day M type (multiple entries).

I need to stay for longer than 60 days.
Can I go to Hong Kong for the weekend and return to Beijing to fulfill the visa requirement?
Do I need to apply for paperwork to go to hong kong?
Can I do the Direct Transit within 24 hours without applying for anything?

(I basically want to fulfill my visa requirements to stay in Beijing longer, the easiest, cheapest, and fastest way)

Yes, you can exit Hk and then re-enter to stay for another 60 days.
US passport holders can enter HK freely for a stay of not exceeding 90 days. You just need to provide passport, the return ticket and enough travel fees.

Thanks a lot!
The company I am doing business with just told me that they can help me apply for an extension of my visa for another 60 days (although they don't seem too familiar with the process). Do you know if this is a valid way to extend my visa?

I would rather not leave the country if possible, I thought it was the only way to deal with the multiple entry visa.
