144 Hour Transit Visa: Outside of Beijing?

I'm planning on staying in Beijing for 6 days using the 144hr transit. However, I'd like to visit X'ian. Would I be able to go to X'ian or am I not aloud? There isn't a border between the two cities so how could I be stopped?
