About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

I am a New Zealand citizen taking a cruise on NCL that starts in Shangai

stopping in Beijing overnight then onto Dalian I plan on arriving in Shangai 3 days before the cruise begins, so if you count the day at sea, will be in China for 8 days will I need a visa or does the 144 visa free come into play.
I look forward to your reply.
Thanks
