About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

My husband and I will travel from San Francisco to Bangkok via Shanghai.

We are both US Citizens. Thailand does not require a visa if we stay less than 30 days. We plan to spend 2 nights in Shanghai due to late arrival from USA. We have confirmed tickets on Thai International Airways from PVG to BKK.
Will this (no visa to Thailand) cause any problem upon entering into Shanghai ?

Thank you for your reply. Is it also accurate that I must obtain transit permit prior to arrival into Shanghi ? Do you have any advice about how to obtain such documents?

No, you don’t need to make the application in advance. When you board the flight, you just need to tell the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. When you arrive at Shanghai airport, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the free transit facility.
