Flying from San Francisco Guangzhou but transiting thru Beijing

HI I am an US citizen flying from SFO to CAN transiting thru PEK. Do I need to pick up my luggage and go thru customs and recheck my luggage in Beijing airport? How long usually it takes? I have the Chinese Visa.
