Overnight stay in Beijing

My husband and I are traveling to the Philippines with a stopover in Beijing for 24 hours 15 minutes according to our itinerary. I am a US passport holder, he is a Philippines passport holder. Will would like to stay in a hotel overnight and possible see the Great Wall before departing. Is this possible due to the 15 minute overage? Or is he required to obtain a different visa?
