About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have a flight from Chicago to Beijing .

Hello,
We arrive there December 26,2017 at 4:25 pm. We also have another flight to Bangkok on December 29 but we have a connection flight to Guangzhou (Can) first, we don’t plan to get off the airport over there, but we do plan to get off at Beijing. Do we qualify for the 72 hour free transit even if is a connection to another city within China? Or do we need to apply for a visa? Thank you!

You no longer qualify for the visa-free transit program because of your stop in Guangzhou. Get a visa or change your flight.

Could I change my connection flight to Hong Kong or it has to be a direct flight to Bangkok? Thank you again

HK is fine as it's a 3rd country as well.
