harbin ice festival trial period?

Question

I would like to go to the ice festival at the end of December, but I understand this is the trial period time.  What does that mean?  Will we still many sculptures and light displays?  Is it still a good time go?  We will have our 2 year-old son with us, so we'd like to go before the coldest time of the year.

During the trail operation, visitors can enter the sites to enjoy many sculptures and lights, so it is good timing to go. Also it won't be very crowded during that time. However, some grand sculptures may still be under construction, which won't open to the public until Jan. 5, 2018.It is very cold there in the end of Dec. although it is not the coldest period. Do prepare down jacket, and other thermal clothing for him. Gloves, scarves and cotton masks are necessary as well. Have a good trip!
