If you don't you have a Chinese visa, then you can transit China without a visa for 24 hours, from scheduled arrival time at PEK to scheduled departure time from CAN.
(By the way, this does not currently work in reverse: you would need a visa to travel MEL-CAN-PEK-WAW).0
