Do I need a visa travelling from U.K. To land in shanghai and cruise and depart from here?

I am arriving and departing on a four day cruise to Japan returning to the city then staying one night and then returning to uk. Do I need visa or will it be covered by the 144 hr exemption?

So you will take a round trip on cruise? If so, you are not eligible for the visa-free transit. But if your trip has separate routes: UK - SH - Japan, Japan - SH - UK, you can enjoy the 144h visa-free exmept for both ways.

In that case, you can enjoy the 144h visa free transit for twice.

Thank you Uranda. No one in this country has heard of this. The Chinese Embassy say it is not something they are aware of. At the airport someone told me that I would qualify for the 72 hr transit visa. It's all just so confusing. How sure are you as I am anxious that I am correct before travelling but £152 is a lot of money if it's not needed!

You need to confirm whether you will go through the immigration in Japan. If yes, you are qualified for the 144h visa-free transit. If not, your trip will be a round route from/to UK, then you cannot enjoy the policy, and a visa shall be needed.
