About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

19 Hour Layover in Kunming (KMG) via Plane

Flying SFO-TAO (2hr layover) - KMG (19hr layover) - BKK with US passport. We want to leave the airport in Kunming, can we do so using the 72-hour free transit?

You do not qualify for 72 hours visa-free transit because you have two stops in China, which immediately limits you to a maximum of 24 hours visa-free transit. If your time in China is longer than 24 hours (from your scheduled arrival in Qingdao to scheduled departure from Kunming), you need to have a visa in advance or else you will be denied boarding in SFO.

Thanks for the reply! We arrive in TAO at 6:35pm and leave KMG at 6:20pm the next day so we are within the country for LESS than 24 hours, can we still leave the airport in Kunming?

Yes, that's fine and you're good to go.
