About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

SFO-TAO(1hr 40min)-KMG(23hr 10min)-CCU

Hi, I have a flight from San Francisco to Kolkata via China Eastern, and there is one stop in Qingdao for 1hr40 min and another stop in Kunming for 23 hr 10min. I arrive in Kunming at 00:10am and leave at 11:20pm. I would like to get out of the airport in Kunming for the 23 hour transit and check into a hotel and see the town. Does this qualify for the 24 hour or 72-hr visa-free transit? Which one specifically? How do I apply for this transit visa?
Thank you.

You need a visa in advance and you apply for it at your nearest embassy or consulate. Two stops in China automatically limits you to 24 hours transit without visa in China.

So can I just get a 24 hour visa-free transit stamp in Kunming when I arrive? Or I need to apply for a tourist visa ahead of time at the consulate?

Unfortunately a visa obtained in advance is a must in this case because you have more than one stop within mainland China and your entire transit time has exceeded 24 hours.
