Traveling from Seoul to Shanghai, what visa do we need?

Hello,
I'm planning a trip with my friend for January 2018, for three days. I hold an Irish passport, he holds a South Korean passport. I plan to book flights in and out of Pudong airport. Are we eligible for visa-free travel? I'm really confused about the requirements for the 72/144 hour free stay.

Kat, if you will travel like Korea-Shanghai for 3 days-Korea, you won't qualify for the free transit because the trip is not a transit at all.
