72 and 144 hour visa free question

I am trying to fly from the USA-->Beijing-->Shanghai-->Hong Kong and I want to stay 1 day in Beijing and 2 days in Shanghai along the way. Is this possible using the 72 hour and 144 hour transit exceptions?

No, you need a visa to travel like that. If you have those two stops in China you are limited to 24 hours transit.
