About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Registering with police station

In relation to the 144 hour free transit waiver, is it true that you have to register with the police when you arrive? (This example would be London - Shanghai - Singapore - London). I have read somewhere that you would need to register with the police upon arrival in Shanghai?

Registration with police is mandatory if 1) you will be on Chinese soil for more than 24 hours and 2) you are NOT staying in a hotel or hostel during this period. Hotel staff are obligated to register on your behalf so there's nothing you need to do if staying in a hotel.
