About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Not transiting, just staying

Is it possible to visit for only 72 hours without exactly "transiting'; i.e., going from one city to China to another city? Can I go from Seoul to Shanghai and depart for Seoul within 72 hours? I'm from the USA and my Korean wife has a conference for a weekend and wants us to travel together.

No. Seoul-Shanghai-Seoul is not a transit at all, so you cannot enjoy the free transit policy in mainland China. You are advised to apply for a visa in advance.
