About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling by plane from HONG Kong

I just noticed that you can't travel another way than by plane to use the 72 hour free transit. But can I just buy a plane ticket from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and back witin 3 days?

Hong Kong-Guangzhou-Hong Kong isn't a transit, so obviously this itinerary does not qualify for visa-free transit.
