Renewing a child's Chinese passport while in Canada who has a visitor's permit, not a student permit

I went to the Chinese Consulate in Canada and they told me that they can't renew my child's passport unless he has a Student permit. He has a visitor's permit since a student permit is not required for elementry school. Do I have to go back to China with my child to renew his passport or there is another way?

Hi, Sean, if you are told so, maybe you should make the passport renewal in mainland China then. Or you can try to find an agency to help you make the application, and they can always find a way to solve this kind of problem.

Chinese consulates in Canada and the U.S. will not issue replacement passports to persons without long-term legal status in these countries. They will only get your kid a single-entry Chinese Travel Document good for one trip to China. You have two options: apply to IRCC for a study permit (they will usually issue you one even when it's not required), and then you can proceed to renew your passport; or use the single-entry Chinese Travel Document to return to China and renew your passport at your place of Hukou. Keep in mind that Chinese law requires all applicants to visit the EEA to apply or renew travel documents regardless of age, and an agency cannot help you to evade this requirement.
