About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Two layovers

We are flying from Vancouver to Bangkok . We have two layovers on both flights.
Dec 31/17 flying from Canada landing in Nanjing with a 5 hour 20 minute layover and then flying to Kunming with a 12 hour 15 minute layover. Arrive in Nanjing at 2:45 pm Jan1/18 Departure from Kunming at 1:15 pm Jan 2/18
Jan 14/18 flying from Bangkok landing in Kunming with a 13 hour and 40 minute layover and then flying to Nanjing with a 20 hour and 5 minute layover. Arrive in Kunming at 12:30 am Jan 15/18 Departure from Nanjing 1:10 pm Jan 16/18
Will we be eligible for the 72 hour free transit and can we leave the airport in both Nanjing and Kunming?

Hi, you won’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit because it only allows the traveler to transit in one Chinese city. But if you total layover time in mainland China is within 24 hours from Vancouver to Bangkok or from Bangkok to Vancouver, you can make use of the 24 hour direct transit. Then you can just apply for a free temporary stay permit at the airport to explore the city. Otherwise, you need to apply for a visa beforehand for the trip.
