We are flying from Vancouver to Bangkok . Arrive in Kunming at 12:30 am Jan 15/18 Departure from Nanjing 1:10 pm Jan 16/18Will we be eligible for the 72 hour free transit and can we leave the airport in both Nanjing and Kunming?

Hi, you won’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit because it only allows the traveler to transit in one Chinese city. But if you total layover time in mainland China is within 24 hours from Vancouver to Bangkok or from Bangkok to Vancouver, you can make use of the 24 hour direct transit. Then you can just apply for a free temporary stay permit at the airport to explore the city. Otherwise, you need to apply for a visa beforehand for the trip.

Are we able to apply for a short term transit G to allow for two stops in china?

No. You need to apply for the visa before the trip.
