About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai- USA

I am trying to figure out if we need to apply for a transit visa or follow the 144 hour free transit option in Shanghai.

Our first flight arrives in Shanghai evening at 6 pm, leaving the next morning at 8 am (14 hour layover) onward to Japan. We do intend to stay at a hotel at the airport. Our return flight leaves Japan and arrives in Shanghai at 10 pm and departs the next day at 9 pm (23 hours stay) back to the USA.

Would both of these stays qualify for a 144 hour free transit stay in Shanghai or should we apply for a transit G with multiple entries?

I am not a expert, however I've done lots of research on this subject. from what you have type it looks like you would qualify. Take note, the policy indicates that you must have a "seat number" assigned, not just the flight. In my case I have yet to get a seat number, my question is just below yours.

Hope this helps.

Shane, your case couldn't be more straightforward. Your itinerary is clearly eligible for 24 hours direct transit in both directions. Robb, you don't need a seat assignment; you just need a confirmed onward ticket.
