About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Japan - Shanghai Airport (PVG) - New York

I am an American citizen and flying from Japan and layover in 8 hours at Shanghai Airport (PVG) to New York. I was wondering do I need a visa or anything else to go around the city of Shanghai?
What is the procedure for it? Please advise

Margaret, you don’t need it because you qualify for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. After arrival at the airport, you can go to the immigration office to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge and then you can leave the airport to travel around the city.
