About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Just double-checking that I understand this visa correctly: US to Beijing to Hong Kong

I will be flying round-trip from the US to Beijing. Will have another flight to Hong Kong after my initial landing. Am I able to do the 72-hour free transit between my round-trip flight?

Yes, if you are on non-stop flights and your passport qualifies.
