About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Boston - Qingdao - Hong Kong - Boston

Hello,

I have a US passport and I have a question about China's 72 hours visa transit. If I depart from Boston (11/27) and arrive in Qingdao (11/28) at 1:30pm, and fly out from Qingdao (12/1) at 8am, would I qualify for the 72 free transit? I saw many information that tells me it is fine, but I need more assurance. Please let me know, thanks!

Best regards,
Christine

AFAIK There are no direct flights from Logan to Qingdao, so you'd better make sure your inbound or outbound flight does not stop elsewhere in Mainland China because that would make you ineligible for the 72-hr transit.

My layover will be Hong Kong so my first itinerary will be Boston-Hong Kong-Qingdao. Then, my other flights are Qingdao to Hong Kong, and Hong Kong to Boston. Everyone kept telling me that I need to get a visa, but I believe that I don’t need to since I can stay for 72hours. I should be fine, am I right?

Wrong. HKG-TAO-HKG is not transit under any circumstances. You'll need an L visa which costs $140 and is good for 10 years.

It needs to be to a third country or region. Now if it was Hong Kong to Qingdao to Macau, that would likely be ok. You cannot return to/through the same country that you entered China from.
