18hr layover in guangzhou

I fly from perth australia to seoul korea on Southern China airlines, but I have an 18hr connection time in Guangzhou, would I apply for 72hr transit visa with airline, so as to collect my luggage and find hotel? What happens if visa is not permitted but luggage is delivered to Guangzhou for collection?

Based on newest reports, Guangzhou no longer allows persons with layover for less than 24 hours to clear immigration. As for the luggage, it would normally be delivered to your final destination, but you'd better double-check that with your airline.
