Will all hotels and even hostels do the police registering thing for you? Because I'm planning on staying at a really cheap hostel..

All hotels and hostels are obligated by law to register their guests, however a good number of hostels and hotels are not authorized to accept reservations from people without Chinese ID cards. You'd better double check with your hostel to make sure this isn't the case.
