About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this itinerary qualify:

I am flying, with a Canadian Passport:
Boston, US -> London, UK (6hrs) -> Shanghai - [staying less than 6 days] -> London, UK -> Boston, US.
Would this qualify? If not, would it be enough to hold a ticket (that I might not use) from Shanghai-Hong Kong (say)?

BOS-LHR-PVG-LHR-BOS will not qualify and you will be denied boarding. If you attempt to cheat immigration by not flying the PVG-HKG leg then you will be blacklisted when you leave Shanghai, which will void your chance of using any type of visa-free transit in the future. In comparison, L visas for Canadians are C$100 and offer multiple entries valid for the life of your passport.
