About:Chinese Consulate in New York

Do I need a visa for a four-day transit through China?

I am traveling in January on a cruise in Vietnam and Cambodia. At the end of the cruise, my group flies to Hong Kong, then transfers to Shanghai, where we will stay for three nights. Then we fly back to Hong Kong for flight to U.S.

Do we need entry permits for this short stay?

Hi, if you will fly like HK-Shanghai(3 days)-HK-US, you need to apply for a visa for that in advance.

What happened to the 144-hour rule? My travel agent told me we don't need an entry permit for China if we are there for less than 144 hours. We are staying only 72 hours in Shanghai and transiting through Hong Kong with no overnights.

We still need a visa?

144 hour free transit cannot cover the trip of HK-Shanghai(3 days)-HK because it is not a transit.

My friend and I are going to China in January 2018.
I plan to go to the consulate to get an entry permit.
Do I need passport photos?
Can I bring her passport and mine and get entry permits for BOTH of us, even if she is not there?

Yes, you need passport photos for the application. You cannot bring your friend's passport and yours to the consulate to get visas for both of you if she is not there.
