About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arrive Shanghai then boarding cruise ship

I am arriving in Shanghai via Delta Airlines, staying one night at Equatorial Hotel in Shanghai and then boarding Celebrity Millennium. We do not go to any other ports in China until we disembark in Hong Kong.
Will the 144 hour visa exemption work for me?
Thanks

In principle, you qualify for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, but if your transit time is less than 24 hours, you may be required to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at Shanghai. Afterwards, you can leave for the hotel. No visa is required for that, either.
