About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Why can't I fly round trip from the same country to qualify for the 72 hour free transit policy?

I would like to fly from Korea -> Beijing -> Korea. It looks like that is not acceptable for the 72 hour free transit policy. Does anyone know why?

Because you're not in transit.

I am trying to understand why china has this requirement. I don't understand why it is ok to fly through china to a different country but I am not allowed to return to my country of origin. Do you know?

Each country has different rules regarding entry for non-citizens. China's visa waiver is based on the reciprocity principle. Because Chinese require visas to travel to the US, Americans also need visas to travel to China.
