About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Regular Tourist Travel Visa to China for Canadians

Based upon an answer to my previous question, I would not qualify for a 72-hour free transit pass to Beijing due to additional layover stops in China.

As a result, I was planning to apply for a regular tourist travel L to China from Canada. I heard this entry permit will cost over $200 by the time you add in all of the consular and service fees, but is then good for up to 10 years depending upon the life of your passport. Does this mean that I will be paying the exact same $200+ charge for a China entry permit whether I have a new passport that is good or 10 years or if my wife has an old passport that has only 3 years remaining on it?

This does not sound right although I have been told this is indeed the case. Can anybody also confirm this to me.

Thanks again!!!

That is indeed the case, as stated by the agreement between China and Canada. If your wife wants a visa with longer validity, then she will have to renew her passport early. The total fees charged by visa centers is slightly under $200 ($100 for the visa fee, plus ~60 for other miscellaneous fees).
