Guangzhou - Hong Kong Immigration

We have a long layover in Guangzhou... 15 hours. We'd like to go to Hong Kong. I suppose we will go through immigration at the airport in Guangzhou and then we'll have to go through immigration again at the railway station before boarding the train to Hong Kong, is that right? As Americans, do we need special visiting visas for either China or Hong Kong? Thank you :)

You need visa in enter China mainland unless you managed to use a 24 hours direct transfer visa free policy. It is OK to stay in HK without special visa (I think it is 30 days or 90 days). Immigration will ve at both the airport and before your departure at Guangzhou East Station.
