About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Native (staying in Cambodia) visiting Shanghai 10/5/17 for one week

I have a friend working in Shanghai for a few weeks and invited me over for a one week visit. Do I qualify for the 144 hour free transit as I will be returning to Cambodia?

No. You won't qualify for the 144 hour free transit as your trip is not a transit at all. Try to apply for a visa for that beforehand.
