About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Indian passport holder and transition in Kunming and Shanghai airport

I hold Indian Passport and my child holds USA passport. I am travelling to India and I have a 9+ hours wait at Shanghai airport. On way back to USA, I have 15+ hours wait in Kunming airport. Can we leave the airport during the transition and get into the city/hotel.

Hi, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in mainland China in both directions, no visa will be required for that. You need to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at the airport, then you can leave there to get into the city/hotel.

I couldn't reach out to China Consulate on USA to confirm this. I have other sites that suggest that I have to stay in the airport.
Do you have any Chinese embassy site which has a clarification on this.
