From Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Can we use the 72 hour free transit for this?

We have a layover in Guangzhou for 13 hours and wanted to take the train into Hong Kong.

Jewel, you cannot use the 72 hour free transit facility because you will take the train to HK, but the 72 hour policy is only applicable to flight travelers.
If your travel route is USA-Guangzhou-HK, then you can use the 24 hour direct transit in Guangzhou. No visa is needed then.
