144 hour free transit for US citizen

I am a US citizen with a valid passport. I will be traveling to Shanghai where I will be boarding a ship. I plan to stay in Shanghai for 3 days prior to boarding. I want to stay in Hong Kong a for a few days prior to traveling to Shanghai. If I do this, will the 144 hour free transit apply when I get to Shanghai; or, do I need a visa because I'm traveling from Hong Kong?

Terry, you mean you will travel like USA-HK-Shanghai (3 days)-a different region rather than HK? If yes, you can use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. You don’t need to apply for a tourist L type then.
