About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can I stay in Shanghai for 72 hours without visa ?

Please advise if I can apply for 72 h free transit in Shanghai if I fly from Houston to Shanghai, stay in Shanghai for 72 hours and then to Taipei ?

You don't need a visa if you fly like that (assuming USA passport and non-stop flights).
