Us Citizen 72 hour or 144 hour exemptions

I am traveling from US to Beijing on one round trip. Traveling to Ho Chi Min on another round trip. going there we have a 5 hour layover in Beijing airport. On way back we wanted to spend a few days in Beijing and see the Forbidden City and also the Great Wall. Is this acceptable for free transit?

Is your route US-Beijing-Vietnam-Beijing-US? That would be acceptable for 72 hours in Beijing in both directions without a visa.
