About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 72 hour free transit for this trip?

I am flying to Shanghai to pick up my cat. I will come into China via Shenzhen and then fly to Shanghai. When I leave I will fly from Shanghai to Guangzhou and then to Hanoi, Vietnam.

Definitely not. You have more than one stop in China, so you are clearly limited to 24 hours direct transit unless you get a visa in advance.

I arrive in China at 12:15 AM on August 26. I will leave the country again by 10:25 PM that same day. Does this work?

No. you need to apply for a visa for that beforehand.
