About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadian Citizen in transit overland from Vietnam to Shanghai

Interested in train travel from Vietnam to Shanghai and spending 144 hours in Shanghai. Exit Shanghai airport to Japan. Is the overland portion from Vietnam to Shanghai allowed without a entry permit?

Elissa, you are eligible for the 144 hr free transit in Shanghai. No visa is required for that.

You'll need a visa because free transit for rail passengers is limited to those whose final destination is Hong Kong.
