About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Beijing 72 hour free transit for this

I'm on separate tickets Bangkok to Beijing on Thai and then a Qantas ticket Beijing to Sydney. Is this permitted under the 72 hours transit rule or do both flights have to be on the one ticket?
