72 hr free visa from another country

I am a US citizen with U.S. Passport and visiting Asia. I want to visit Beijing for 3 days but plan on visiting Bali first then fly to BJ. then to Taiwan. is this ok? I looked at flights from Bali to BJ.
Bali to BJ arrive at 8:40 AM monday and BJ to Bali flight departure 1:55PM Thursday. this will be over 72 hours by just 5 hours. how strict is the 72 hour rule?

I am afraid that you need to apply a visa for your trip. The 72-hour visa free policy will count from the arrival time of your flight and end at the time of your departure flight strictly at PEK.
