Do I qualify for the 72hr free transit?

I am planning travel from Seattle (USA). My proposed itinerary is: Seattle to Beijing (21 hour layover), Beijing to Shanghai (48 hour layover), then Shanghai to Tokyo. Will I need to apply for a visitor visa because I am not leaving from the same airport or does this qualify because it is under 72 hours and has a 3rd country?

You'll need a visa because your total time spent in China exceeds 24 hours.
