About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2 tickets - Ireland -> Shanghai Shanghai -> Hong Kong

Hi, I am a bit confused about the concept of "transit",
let's say I fly from Ireland to Hong Kong with 144hour stop in Shanghai, 2 tickets:
Ireland -> Shanghai
Shanghai -> Hong Kong
Is this considered a transit or should i have a unique ticket with one delay in Shanghai?

thanks

michele
