About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Registering at a local police station within 24 hours

I intend to take advantage of the 144hr TWOV when I arrive at Shanghai's PVG airport on 27th. October 2017. I will travel directly to a cruise ship docked at the Shanghai International Cruise Terminal, which will set off to Japan the following day (28th. Oct).

As there is a requirements to register at local police station within 24 hours. Is there a police station in the airport that I can register at, before leaving the airport? Alternatively, how can I find out where the closest police station is to Shanghai International Cruise terminal?

Registration is not mandatory if your stay is less than 24 hours. Regardless, a hotel will complete the process by scanning your passport and sending it to the local police station.

Thanks John Doe for your reply.

My stay in Shanghai will be approx 36 hrs.

I am not sure if my cruise ship is like a hotel, who will pass on my passport details automatically to the police?

Trying to get any information, in advance, from the cruise line, is near on impossible.

I'm assuming here that you'll be spending the night on the cruise itself, however AFAIK cruise boarding does not usually start until the day the cruise is scheduled to depart, because you'll clear outbound immigration at the terminal. Hence it may not be possible to board the cruise at the day of your arrival, which means you must make your own arrangements for the first night. Be sure to double check that with your operator.

Hi John Doe,

We are spending the night on the cruise ship, travelling straight there from the airport, before it sets off for Japan at 6pm the following day. We will carry out check-in immigration procedures at the port before we board on that first day.

See, I'm not sure if the cruise company actually allows that. But if you clear immigration at your first day of arrival then no registration is mandatory, since you technically have already left China.
