Is 10 year tourist L type void after you apply for student X type

The lady at the desk where you apply for entry permit has told me that my 10 year tourist L type would be void and I would have to get a new one if I want to re-enter. She also would not give me a multiple entry visa does that mean I cannot go to Hong Kong on a week end trip to visit.
