Will this qualify for 144 hours free visa in Shanghai?

I am a U.S. citizen with a U.S. passport. I may be traveling to Hong Kong for a week. On the way home from Hong Kong, I was thinking of stopping over in Shanghai for a few days then back to the U.S. Since I would be starting from Hong Kong then to Shanghai and then back to the U.S., would that qualify for the 144 hours free visa? I wasn't sure if that would qualify since I am a citizen of the 3rd country of the trip
