Applying for longer stay with Airline?

Hi,

I am an Australian citizen traveling from Brisbane to Heathrow in August. I will be stopping over in Guangzhou for 8 hours on the way there. But on my way home, I have extended my layover in Guangzhou from Amsterdam to Brisbane for 62 hours. I've been told I need to apply for a visa, I'm still unsure why as my stay is less than 72 hours?

You cannot "apply" for longer stay with the airline as they are not an immigration agency. In this case, the airline's employee is misinformed, and you can stay in Guangzhou for up to three days.

I'm not applying with the airline regarding my visa. I applied to stay longer because my initial layover was only 7 hours. I'm wanting to extend it to 62 hours so I can spend some time in the city. But they're telling me that my third country must be a destination that is not my home country.
