About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flying into Shanghai and Boarding Cruise Ship

We are planning to fly into Shanghai, from Canada, and arriving on 29 April 2018.
Our flight arrives at 3:25 PM Shanghai time and we will be boarding our cruise ship within 72 hours. The cruise ship, however, does not leave port until 8:00 PM Shanghai time, which would be 77 hours after our arrival at the Shanghai international airport.
Do we require a China Visa or do the 72 and/or 144 hour rules apply for visiting Shanghai?

James, you qualify for the 144 hour free transit if you will go to a third country or region after transiting in Shanghai. No need to apply for a visa.

Thank-you Nicole,
I'm still not comfortable since I am leaving on a cruise ship and, although we will be beyond the 12 mile limit for two days, the next port-of-call is Beijing.
