If I am from USA but I have a Vietnam passport and I want to stay over 12 hrs in the city so

Do I need a visa if I stay there for 12 hrs?

I am staying in kunming and get a hotel in 12hrs waiting to transfer so I can go out to wait in the hotel or not?
